Tano-Suraw Agribusiness Growth Initiative (TAGI)
Tano-Suraw Agribusiness Growth Initiative (TAGI) is a community-based integrated agricultural development project which employs locally-driven strategies for accelerated rural development.
TAGI is designed to stimulate long term economic growth and improve the livelihood of communities in the Wiawso area by:
The overarching goals of TAGI is to create “economies of scale” while integrating small scale farmers into local and regional supply chains by training farmers to produce for available markets.
Based on the assessment of the communities in the mine area as well as surrounding areas, African Connections in partnership with Chirano Gold Mine Ltd and in collaboration with the five communities – Paboase, Akoti, Etwebo, Kwawkrom and Anyinase - designed the Tano-Suraw Agribusiness Growth Initiative (TAGI).
Sefwi Wiawso / Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Districts are widely known for their potential for agricultural activities. The districts’ agro-ecological nature is good for the cultivation of plantain, chili pepper, soybeans, and citronella. Statistically, about three-quarters of the economically active population are engaged in agriculture.
Currently, we are working on three crops – chili pepper, plantain and soybean. These crops have high export potential with high economic returns. We are introducing ginger in the next farming season. |
