The Focus on Agriculture Conference is an initiative by African Connections. The two-day Conference is organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture; Ministry of Fisheries and the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS). The Conference will offer key stakeholders the opportunity to meet and brainstorm on various strategies for agricultural sustainability to accelerate rural economic development.
Agriculture remains the most important industry in tropical Africa. Economic development and the welfare of the majority of African people depend on the performance of the agricultural industry. It is, therefore, imperative that innovative strategies/policies are formulated and implemented to reduce, if not totally eradicate, a lot of the challenges facing the agricultural sector in the country.
African Connections believes that the adoption of the approach outlined below will help establish agriculture as the vehicle to drive accelerated rural economic development:
- Animate commodity / produce farmer associations;
- Develop farmer associations that are self-reliant and autonomous;
- Train farmers on good agricultural practices to produce to meet market standards and specifications;
- Facilitate access to credit for farmer associations;
- Link farmer associations to market opportunities; and
- Facilitate the processing of farm produce.
The key objectives of the Event are as follows:
- Bringing together various stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for sustainable agriculture for accelerated rural economic development;
- Building the capacity of Ghana’s 170 MMDAs to utilize innovative strategies for sustainable agriculture;
- Exploring various agriculture-based strategies to accelerate rural development through Public-Private Partnerships;
- Exploring the opportunities to advance and sustain agriculture to accelerate rural economic development;
- Providing opportunities for MMDAs; farmer groups and other stakeholders to present their agro-based projects for accelerated rural economic development; and
- Providing a platform for key agro-based firms and financial institutions to showcase their available services and products.
